Some scientists think that dolphins were land animals 50-60 million years ago which ventured into the sea because it was easier for them to catch fish.
Dolphins and their immediate kin are included in the scientific family Delphinidae. This family is represented by about 32 species, including common dolphins, pilot whales, killer whales, and false killer whales. Dolphins and porpoises are cetaceans, which are mammals in the family. Dolphins and porpoises are considered to be small whales. All dolphins and porpoises are toothed whales, or odontocetes.
Dolphins have been a source of amazement and interest to people for many years. There are at least 32 species of dolphins. The Bottle-nosed Dolphin is the best studied and generally the best-known species of dolphins. Bottle-nosed dolphins are named for their snout, which is distinctly set off from the head, like the neck of a bottle. Dolphins can be found in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, though they prefer warm to tropical water. Bottlenose dolphins live near the coast and inshore waters from northern Cape Hatteras to southern Florida and westward through the Gulf of Mexico. Another population lives near the continental shelf off New Jersey.
SOCIAL ANIMALS
Bottlenose dolphins live in small pods of up to 12 dolphins; they are very social animals. Often, many pods group together to form congregations of hundreds of dolphins. Group size is affected by habitat structure and tends to increase with water depth. Group members interact closely and are highly cooperative in feeding, protective, and nursery activities.
Bottlenose dolphins are hunters who find their prey at the surface of the water, eating mostly fish. They sometimes hunt in groups and herd schools of fish toward shore for feeding. Dolphins consume 13 to 33 pounds of food per day.
Bottlenose dolphins often live 30 to 50 years. Sexual maturity of female bottlenose dolphins can become sexually mature as young as 5 years old, although most don't become mature until they are around 11 or 12. Males become sexually mature between the ages of about 9 and 13 years old. Males fight viciously over females during the breeding season, and a hierarchy based on size is generally established in a group of males. Bottlenose dolphins' gestation period (the length of time that they are pregnant) is about 11 or 12 months.
During birth, an assisting dolphin, which may be either male or female, remains close to the mother and often is the only other dolphin permitted near the newborn calf. Dolphins and porpoises are considered to care after the calf as it comes out of its mother's womb. There is a dramatic change in temperature which makes it need help to reach the surface for its first breath. It swims rapidly to the top as the mother helps push it.
DOLPHIN CALVES
Calves are usually between 42 and 52 inches long at birth and weigh approximately 44 pounds. Their tail flukes and dorsal fin are pliable at first but gradually become firm, and their dark coloration and the lines on their sides (due to fetal folding) usually disappear within six months. Calves nurse within several hours of their birth, suckling from nipples that are concealed in the mother's abdominal mammary slits. Calves nurse for five to ten seconds, between three and eight times an hour, day and night, for up to 18 months. The mother's rich milk (composed of 33 percent fat, 6.8 percent protein, and 58.3 percent water and traces of lactose) helps the calf produce its thick layer of blubber. Calves begin to eat a few fish within three or four months.
During the first two years of birth the calves will feed off of milk from the mother. Dolphins give birth every 2 - 4 years and once the calf is about 3 years old, it is ready to go off on its own.
slamorada "Hump". As summer approaches, the dolphin are warm-blooded mammals, which breathe air.
All dolphins, including the bottlenose dolphin, have strong eye muscles that can change the shape of the eye lens in order to focus in both air and water. Dolphins can recognize some colors and their pupils can adjust to light and dark changes in their environment. Dolphins have a well-developed sense of hearing and navigate their environments through echolocation. Bottlenose Dolphins are grey, varying from dark grey at the top near the dorsal fin to very light grey and almost white at the underside. The salt water makes them hard to see both from above and below when swimming. The elongated upper and lower jaws give the animals their name of bottlenose. The real nose however is the blowhole on top of the head, and the nasal septum is visible when the blowhole is open. Their face shows a characteristic "smile". Adults range in length from 6 to 13 feet and in weight from 330 to 1430 pounds with males being slightly longer and considerably heavier than females on average. The size of the dolphin appears to vary considerably with habitat.
MORE ABOUT DOLPHINS
Every 5-8 minutes, the dolphins have to rise to the surface to breathe through their blowhole. (However, on average, they breathe more often - several times per minute.) Their sleep is thus very light; some scientists have suggested that the two halves of their brains take turns in sleeping and waking. It has also been suggested that they have tiny periods of microsleep.
They are powerful swimmers. While they frequently "cruise" at speeds of between 3-7 mph, they are capable of maintaining speeds of 22 mph for short periods, known as "bursts
. Dolphin shows are great trips for the whole family.

A hurricane is a tropical system with maximum sustained winds of at least 74 mph. At the center of the hurricane is an "eye" that varies in size but is commonly 20 to 30 miles wide. While the storm itself may extend out from the eye several hundred miles, hurricane force winds (74 mph) routinely extend 50 to 100 miles out of the eye. Atlantic hurricanes "spin" in a counter clockwise rotation that is started by the rotation of the earth.
