The railroad that went to sea

 

 

On January 22, 1912 Henry Morrison Flagler found himself in his private rail car, traveling the Key West Extension from main land Florida to Key West. Before 1912, travel between the island in the Florida Keys was only possible by boat.

Perhaps only Flagler knew his true reasons for building the Key West Extension of his railroad. This railroad went from main land Florida, Miami to Key West. He spent years figuring routes to Key West. In 1906 the estimated cost of the Key West Extension was fifty million dollars and five years of labor.

UPPER KEYS - KEY LARGO - ISLAMORADA - TAVERNIER   It all started in the late 1800's, when Standard Oil magnate Henry Flagler decided to build a railroad down Florida's east coast. Miami was established soon after Flagler extended the railroad to what was then a isolated outpost. He ccontinued to build the railroad from MiAMI to KEY WEST. The legendary railroad reached Key West in 1912.

Timeline:

1896 - Henry Flagler's East Coast Railway comes from Palm Beach into Miami.

1903 - City of Homestead is incorporated.

1904 - Henry Flagler's East Coast Railway rolled from Miami into Homestead making accessible the Fertile lands of South Dade.

1908 - Daily train service begins from Miami to Marathon.

1916 - Dan Killan moved to the rural enclave from Tennesse. He bought and ran a general store and became active in local government. He served on the County Commission from 1922 until 1926.

1920 - This was a period of dramatic growth in South Florida. Real estate changed hands at a frenetic pace. Thousands bought and sold tracts of land. Developers built new communities, including Coral Gables, Hialeah, and Miami Shores.

1929 - Miami experience the economic trials of the Great Depression.

In the 1950's, South Florida was in the throe's of post-war boom. New arrivals appered, drawn by the sun and the promise of prosperity. Kendal was an offical swamp, because it flooded often. The government prohibited homesteaders from settling on it. The law did allow individuals to purchase the land. In 1883 the state of Florida sold four million acres, to a group of Englishmen. A few years later, Henry John Boughton Kendall came to South Florida to manage the holdings. 

In 1950 Arthur Vining Davis of the Alcoa Company (Aluminum Company of America). Davis moved to Miami from Pittsbourgh and started buying land. He owned 72,000 acrea's in Dade County, the largest block of private property in the area. Davis agreed to support the building of a hospital. He offered one caveat: that it be built on 55 acres of his land in the rural area called Kendall.

1958 - construction of the hospital began. He insisted the hospital size be increased and it be built in an Italian Renaissance architectural style.

1950 Nathaniel Levin, M.D. comes to the Upper Florida Keys. The Russian immigrant lived in South Florida and bought a second home in the Keys. An avid fisherman and swimmer. He visited the keys with his fimily  whenever he could embrace the lifestyle. At that time the only hospitals where south in Key West or north in Homestead. Sick people would knock on the doctors door and he would see patients on his porch.

Dr.Levin organized a nine bed bospital, called Overseas Hospital on the property he owned next to his house.

1962 - Overseas Hospital opens

1966 - Overseas Hospital becomes Keys  Community Hospital

1980 - Keys Community Hospital becomes Mariners Hospital

1996 - Mariners Hospital becomes part of Baptist Health
