Pineapples of the Upper Keys
A tropical American plant (Ananas comosus) having large swordlike leaves and a large, fleshy, edible, multiple fruit with a terminal tuft of leaves.
Pineapples (Ananas comosus) are native to southern Brazil and Paraguay, but after the colonisation of the New World, they were rapidly transported to all areas of the tropics. They are now widely grown in tropical and sub-tropical areas
Upper Keys Farming , like fishing, the wrecker did between salvaging shipwrecks. As the wrecking industry began to close in the latter 1800s, the farming industry expanded.
Captain Ben Baker, a Key West wrecker is credited with being the first to raise pineapples commercially in the Keys. In 1866 he imported 6,000 pineapple slips. ( Slips are suckers cut from the stalk of a live plant ) These sucker cut came from Cuba and were planted on his land in Key Largo. I read of him earning $ 7,000 from his 1871 crop.
Soon new settlers were clearing hundreds of dense woods in the upper Keys to start plantations. The land was cleared by the slash and burn method. The trees and brush are cut down, left to dry and then set on fire. These fields ranged in size from 10 to 100 acres.
Early families of the Keys raised sufficient plant foods to support their own needs and probably enough to trade with neighbors. Messrs. Pinder and Saunders were raising pineapples and made immense shipments in 1881 and 1882. The manner of cultivation was peculiar. No hoe could be used because of the shallowness of the soil. The plants were set 18 inches apart, and left mostly to themselves. One weeding was considered sufficient. . . . On Plantation Key a Mr. Low [Lowe] had a pineapple and coconut grove. The pineapple grove was 30 acres in size and the crop that year [1880] was doing so well that he expected to cut at least 96,000 pineapples. . . ."

Avocado Pears 500 "
Sugar Apples 1000 "
Tomatoes 1500 " ...."
One of the problems the Keys farmers faced was getting the pines (pineapples) to marked befored they spoiled.
The Flagler railway extended to Key West in 1912 and brought in cheap Cuban pineapples. This doomed not only the Bahama pineapple market, but also that of Planter and Plantation Key.
Development on the mainland beginning in the early 1900s required many new canals to drain the land as well as to prevent flooding. The cutting on the deep canals dropped the fresh water table five to seven feet in the Keys.
Pineapples should be planted where the temperature remains warm. Pineapples like lots of sun and grow well in tropical regions around the world.
Plant is surprisingly drought tolerant, but adequate soil moisture is necessary.
Upper Keys generally received about 20 inches more annual rainfall.
The best soil for the pineapple is a friable, well-drained sandy loam with a high organic content.Pineapples are grown from the crowns or tops of other pineapples.
Crowns are the main planting material of home gardeners propagation. These are obtained from store-bought fruit and are removed from the fruit by twisting the crown until it comes free. The bottom leaves are removed and the crown is left to dry for two days, then planted or started in water. Plants are spaced 12 inches apart. Set crowns about 2 inches deep.
When the plants are one year old the flowering process begins. The flower bud is small and pink, and looks like a pine cone.
As the bud grows it will become the fruit we know as a pineapple. It takes 18 months for the plant to produce a pineapple. An acre of land can yield about 7,000 pineapples. After the fruit was cut, the roots would yield a second and a third crop. After four or five crops, the soil becomes exhausted nutrients. The land was abandoned and left to return to its natural state.
THE PINEAPPLE has served as both a food and a symbol throughout the human history of the Americas. The presence of pineapples on Caribbean islands was not a natural event, but rather the result of centuries of indian migration and commerce. It was probably the Guarani Indians who took pineapples on sea voyages as provisions and to prevent scurvy, thus spreading the plants from their native Paraguay throughout South and Central America. Columbus called the fruit piña when he found it in 1493--piña because he thought it looked like a pinecone--and from that we got the name. The Spanish explorers thought pineapples looked like pinecones, so they called them "Pina." The English added "apple" to associate it with juicy delectable fruits.
Caribbean Indians placed pineapples or pineapple crowns outside the entrances of their homes to symbolize friendship and hospitality.
The pineapple is a member of the family Bromeliaceae

A hurricane is a tropical system with maximum sustained winds of at least 74 mph. At the center of the hurricane is an "eye" that varies in size but is commonly 20 to 30 miles wide. While the storm itself may extend out from the eye several hundred miles, hurricane force winds (74 mph) routinely extend 50 to 100 miles out of the eye. Atlantic hurricanes "spin" in a counter clockwise rotation that is started by the rotation of the earth.
