There are many good bicycling trips in the upper keys. There is bicycling from Key Largo to Islamorada in the Upper Keys. Bicycling is one of the best ways you can enjoy your time on our island in the Fabulous Florida Keys.

In the Florida Keys there are Bike Paths along the Overseas Highway. These bike paths continue to various parks and beaches off the highway. Florida Vacation Rental for Bicycling

The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail is a multi-use bicycle and pedestrian facility. This is of a scenic corridor extending from Key Largo to Key West. This trail serves as a recreational greenway that permits hiking, running, bicycling, in-line skatting, sightseeing, fishing and kayaking. The trail system has educational kiosks, roadside picnic areas, scenic overlooks, fishing piers and cat walks, boat ramps, water access points, bicycle and jogging paths. The Old Keys Bridges serve as a central component, providing opportunities for fishing, sightseeing, recreation and historical reflection.

The remaining Florida Keys Overseas Highway and Flagler Railroad Bridges, completed in 1912 were listed on the National Registry on August 3, 2004, which includes all 23 Bridges and is an important aspect of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail.

A hint of a highway to the mainland was uttered in a political address by George W. Allen in 1895. To the author the first major step in modernizing land transportation in the Keys as we know it was the railroad. Along with the railroad came post offices with daily deliveries of people and goods. Many of us today think of the Overseas Highway as a direct result of the 1935 hurricane that destroyed Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway. In many ways this is true; however, the highway actually started evolving earlier. History of the Overseas Highway A visit to the 2,400-acre Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammocks Botanical State Park in Key Largo is another biking trip. It's a user-friendly place to explore the largest remaining stand of the vast West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the United States. There are interpretive signs describe many of the tropical tree species along a 1¼-mi paved road (2½ mi round-trip) that invites walking, rollerblading, and biking path. Bicycling is permitted along the main park roads, on the Shark Valley tram road, on the Old Ingraham Highway, on Long Pine Key Nature Trail, and on the Snake Bight and Rowdy Bend trails at Flamingo. See individual trail descriptions for details.

From the Keys, travel north on US1 to Florida City. Turn left at West Palm Drive (S.R. 9336) and continue nine miles to the park entrance. Upon arriving, stop by the park visitor center , there you will be given an introduction and different ways to experience its wonder.

BIKING IDEA'S - The Upper Keys consists of four communities, Key Largo, Tavernier, Plantation Key, and Islamorada, Get a close up view of these communities as you bike though these neighborhoods. Bike to the the parks and beaches of the upper keys. Islamorada, Indian Key Fill, Old US 1 it runs parallel to the main hwy. There are rest areas in several spots, with vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Upper Keys is near the Florida Everglades, visitors can bike this fasinating preserve with its array of wildlife and botanical treasures. A special favorite for birders! Geology & Climate

The Keys are of coral rock deposits. The islands of the Keys have accumulated over thousands of years. The waters around the land are very shallow, a short distance offshore the waters are a gorgeous deep blue color.

The weather in the Keys is very typical it is a subtropical region. Surrounded by water, the islands are humid, and tend to be five to ten degrees warmer than the mainland Florida in the winter months, and five to ten degrees cooler in the summer months. Although the keys are humid, the islands do not get as much rain as the mainland.
